Milpa is an agricultural system that has been practiced in México for more than 8,000 years ago to this day. It has shaped mexican identity and their relationship with nature, especially of the indigenous communities. In the milpa system you will find all the essential elements of México’s rich gastronomy, like corn, squash, beans & chiles. It is a force that adapts, that generates and maintains diversity and that presents itself as a solution to a rapidly changing world with extreme weather conditions.

Today the milpa system is in danger. The project uses those values as an inspiration for the ceramic tableware designed for Tamales Madre. After a year long glaze research, the tableware reinforces Tamales Madre mission and identity and expresses the dynamic and diverse nature of the milpas and its elements that remain throughout México.
